About the Role

As a Health Data Analyst, you will provide high-quality analysis of health service activity and performance across Health New Zealand. Supporting key directorates such as Hospital & Specialist Services and Commissioning, your work will also inform responses to Parliament, the Ministry of Health, and media enquiries—including OIA requests—placing you at the centre of impactful, high-visibility work.
You'll work with complex datasets from across the health system, uncovering trends and translating them into clear, actionable insights. From exploratory analysis through to dashboards and reporting, your work will support evidence-based decision-making and contribute to improving system performance and equity of outcomes.
This is a dynamic and varied role where you'll collaborate with stakeholders, contribute to performance reporting frameworks, and support continuous improvement across data, tools, and processes.
About the Team
You'll join a collaborative, high-performing analytics team within Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora. The team is passionate about using data to improve health outcomes and drive equity, working closely with stakeholders across government and the wider health sector.

About you
You're a curious and solutions-focused analyst who thrives on turning complex data into clear, actionable insights. You're comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, balancing competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
You will have:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. data science, statistics, computer science, maths or similar)
- 3–5 years' experience in a similar analytical role within a large organisation
- Strong understanding of analytics principles and how they drive business value
- Proven experience analysing complex datasets and delivering high-quality reporting
- Advanced skills in tools such as Power BI, SQL, Excel (Devops and Git desirable)
- Experience in data visualisation, dashboard development, and data modelling
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor insights to different audiences
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build trusted relationships
- Experience with data warehousing concepts and business intelligence frameworks
- Sound judgement, critical thinking, and the confidence to provide advice and recommendations
Ideally, you'll also bring:
- Knowledge of the New Zealand health sector and government environment
- Demonstrated experience applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice
