We are looking for a Medical trainee to join our accredited basic and Advanced Physician training programme. This post is accredited for 6 months of Advanced training in Geriatric Medicine and twelve months advanced training in General Medicine as well as 2 years of basic medical training. We also have Accreditation for Advanced training for a further 6 months in Geriatric Medicine in another post covering Rehabilitation and OrthoGeriatrics, thus providing a total of 12 months training in Geriatric medicine at Advanced level
You will work in the department of Older Persons' Health joining our Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) team. The role comprises working with a Consultant led multidisciplinary team, assessing and managing older people in our Acute ACE beds ,ED and admissions unit We aim to improve the patient journey with a comprehensive assessment from the start of presentation to enable early discharge, prevent deconditioning and enable coordinated discharge planning.
In addition to the ACE work you will have the opportunity to gain experience in inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics and community visits. You will also be able to develop your competence in movement disorders, perioperative medicine ,dementia and falls. We have an excellent multidisciplinary team and believe in patient centred care. The unit is staffed by 5.4 WTE Consultant Geriatricians, another Registrar as well as a PGY1 and PGY2.
The position will allow you to grow your skills as a Registrar working closely with your consultant means you can widen your practice as your skills grow.
We provide close supervision for trainees in inpatient, community and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. We also host medical students from Auckland University and this provides the opportunity to practice and improve your own teaching skills there is an active clinical training programme with didactic sessions, interactive based teaching, journal club and videoconferencing of RACP lectures. There is the opportunity to participate in the Northern Regional Geriatric Medicine Journal Club in Auckland.
Whangarei Hospital provides secondary care services to a large rural region with high levels of social deprivation, an ageing population and high health needs.
