The NZ Ombudsmen are designated to carry out National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) responsibilities under the United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT). These responsibilities are to inspect and monitor the treatment of people in health and disability places of detention, prisons, immigration detention facilities, child care and protection residences and youth justice residences.

The Chief Ombudsman is expanding his NPM inspections function, enabling us to carry out more intensive and more frequent inspections of a wide range of detention facilities across Aotearoa. We recently established an additional Senior Communications Advisor position to provide communications support for our growing NPM role, as well as providing additional general communications support for the Ombudsman's wider complaint handling and proactive systemic improvement functions.

Reporting to the Manager Communications, the new Senior Communications Advisor will assist with the implementation of the new communications strategy.  This role will provide communication advice on routine media enquiries, writing speeches and uploading web content, as well as focussing on the Office's print and digital publications.

Your experience operating at a senior level will enable you to hit the ground running, demonstrating your knowledge and depth of experience to help the team deliver these communications functions. You will be able to build effective and collaborative relationships, juggle multiple projects, liaise with various public sector agencies and as a positive team player be willing to roll up your sleeves to do what's needed on the day.

To be considered for the position, your experience and skills will include:

  • A proven track record in print and digital publications (preferred)
  • Experience writing speeches for a range of external and national audiences
  • Knowledge of how the PR and media industry works
  • A proven track record in delivering internal and external communications at a senior level
  • Ability to quickly build rapport and maintain excellent stakeholder relationships
  • Knowledge and skills to work with a range of communications technologies and web content management systems
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential
  • Highly competent communicator with excellent written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to remain effective under pressure to meet deadlines and achieve results
  • Ability to apply utmost discretion in dealing with sensitive information

The successful appointee may be required to achieve and maintain a NZ government (NZSIS) security clearance and will have a legal entitlement to work in New Zealand.
