Investigator – Auckland/Wellington/Christchurch

Here at the Office of the Ombudsman, we are about fairness for all. The Office handles complaints, carries out investigations, protects the rights of people in detention and provides advice and training to agencies in our goal of helping the NZ public in their dealings with public sector agencies.

Our Complaints Resolution Group is at the heart of our work and we are looking for Investigators to join our team. We have a friendly and collaborative environment where our people enjoy interesting and stimulating work and are passionate about what they do.

As a member of the team, the work you will carry out can present challenges, and requires the ability to be adaptable and resilient. Your resolution-focussed approach will be key to achieving meaningful outcomes in your work and your ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and world views is crucial to success in the role.

In addition, you will have the following experience and skills:

  • a legal or other tertiary qualification and/or experience in fields such as public law, political science or related fields;
  • at least 2 to 3 years' experience in carrying out investigation and/or resolution activities, including an understanding of core investigation principles and standards;
  • knowledge of practice and procedure in central/local government or in the wider public sector;
  • experience gathering and presenting information and to apply critical thinking to complex and varied fact scenarios;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • maintain independence and objectivity, and demonstrate the utmost discretion in dealing with high profile and often very sensitive issues;
  • proven ability to deal with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders;
  • excellent time management, planning and prioritising skills: and
  • ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused when dealing with aggrieved parties

The salary range for this position is $79,578 to $119,366 gross per annum depending on skills and experience.

The successful appointee will have a legal entitlement to work in New Zealand and may be required to achieve and maintain a NZ government (NZSIS) security clearance.
