Mō te Tari o te Kaitiaki Mana Tangata – About the Ombudsman

The Chief Ombudsman works with his staff to help New Zealanders in their dealings with government agencies. The focus is on handling complaints against government agencies, undertaking investigations and inspections, and encouraging good administration. The Chief Ombudsman is independent and impartial, with the goal of fairness for all.

Mō tō mātou tira – About the team

People and Capability are responsible for the development and delivery of human resources (HR) management strategies and plans that support the strategic aims and objectives of the Chief Ombudsman. Our role is to help build the capability of our managers and our employees. 

Mō te tūranga - About the role

As an Advisor, you will be a super star generalist, providing proactive and solution-orientated advice to managers and staff across all P&C activities including recruitment and selection, HR policy, remuneration, terms and conditions of employment, performance management, learning and development, employee engagement, and health and safety. You will also provide coordination and administration support across P&C activities when needed.

He kōrero mōu – About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • a degree or tertiary qualification in business or HR management or related discipline and/or, the equivalent work experience, knowledge, skills and attributes required to be successful in this position;
  • knowledge and understanding of HR policies/procedures and employment legislation;
  • some experience of working with HR practices and processes, and providing advice and support to managers and staff, preferably within the NZ public sector;
  • a good understanding of risk, and a focus on confidentiality in your approach to work;
  • the ability to plan, prioritise and deliver accurate and quality work in a high-pressure environment; and
  • excellent interpersonal skills – written, listening and speaking;
  • experience contributing to recruitment and selection activities or projects

It is a requirement of the Office that all new staff are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 before commencing work.

Depending on skills and experience the salary is expected to be between $60,752 and $79,737 per annum.
