Public Health Nurse - Dunedin - Te Waipounamu - NPHS at Te Whatu Ora, Otago

About the Role

As a Public Health Nurse, you will deliver public health nursing services across the community. Public health nursing includes assessment of population health, attention to the multiple determinants of health, an emphasis on primary prevention, and continued commitment to best evidence based public health nursing practice. This is a permanent part time role.

Public Health Nursing provides a range of tamariki, rangatahi and Hauora services within the whanau and community setting. This includes schools, preschools visiting program and home visiting. This role supports delivery of tamariki and rangatahi health assessments, including immunisations in a range of settings.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Our public health nursing team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, and work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures for all) by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored. 

About you

You will be open minded, quality driven, and can work both independently while being a valued member of a supportive, friendly team demonstrating advanced communication skills with the ability and passion to work with a diverse range of children and their families/whānau. You understand the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are skilled in applying its principles effectively in your role. You build and maintain positive relationships at all levels and model an agile approach, you learn quickly, adapt fast. You are able to utilise advanced nursing knowledge and skills through reflective practice, critical thinking and professional judgement to provide competent care and advice while working to top of scope.

  • Current registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Nurse.
  • Holds a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Ability to demonstrate practice at a competent portfolio level or above
  • Child and whanau health related experience
  • Demonstrated competence in application of Māori health models to Nursing practice
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Demonstrated time management skills
  • Proven experience using Patient Management Systems
  • An eye for detail and commitment for continuous quality improvement
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability and passion to work with a diverse range of children, young people and their families whanau.
  • Respectful and responsive to Whaikaha and persons living with disability
  • Full Drivers Licence.
