Locum Psychiatrist - Older Persons at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Southern, Otago

About the role

We are seeking a Locum Psychiatrist for Older Persons to be based at Dunedin Hospital from March to September 2026.

You will:

  • work within a small multidisciplinary team and be responsible for the psychiatric assessment and care of patients
  • take a leading role in maintaining and enhancing our Mental Health Service
  • contribute to ongoing service improvement and workforce innovation.

Your responsibilities will include the assessment and treatment of older people while working collaboratively with the primary health sector, consistent with Southern's values. As part of the role, you will participate in the on-call roster, which is currently 1:18.

About you

Fellowship with the RANZCP or the equivalent is essential, and ideally you will already have current registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will also have:

  • a commitment to maintaining high standards of practice and a strong dedication to working as part of a team
  • the ability to provide clinical leadership and reliable medical input to the multidisciplinary team
  • a strong commitment to service user and family/whānau inclusion in service delivery, a focus on recovery, and a sound understanding and commitment to biculturalism
  • a demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and providing training to students at all levels.
