At Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Southern, it's truly a team effort. We are looking for someone to join our team who has experience or a passion for patient safety. This is a permanent, full-time role (1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week) working across the district, so the role can be based in Otago or Southland.
About the opportunity
We are looking for a pharmacist, registered nurse, or doctor to join our Patient Safety team.
We need someone with a passion for improving and ensuring safer medication delivery across Southern. In this role, you will use and grow your clinical knowledge while building on your experience in medicines and patient safety. Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Southern is a large tertiary-level hospital serving the lower South Island.

Working alongside the Patient Safety and Pharmacy teams, you will be involved in a variety of work, with a key focus on supporting patient safety activities, particularly medication safety across the organisation.
Key responsibilities include:
- working with all levels and disciplines to support patient safety activity, including medicines safety initiatives and programmes
- developing a proactive approach to medication safety and leading the development and implementation of medicines safety programmes
- supporting teams responsible for improving or upgrading existing processes, providing a patient safety perspective
- facilitating the implementation of local, regional, and national medication safety initiatives
- working with subject matter experts to ensure standard operating procedures (SOPs) and clinical guidelines for high-risk medicines are in place
- facilitating adverse event reviews, guiding review teams, and ensuring high-quality outcomes with clear recommendations and learning
- participating in audit processes as required.
About you
Our ideal candidate will have:
- a current health annual practising certificate
- a relevant postgraduate qualification
- experience in medication safety programmes
- experience in data collection and translating information into insights
- the ability to learn and adapt quickly, with an innovative and solution-focused mindset
- strong organisational skills and the ability to be decisive, forward-thinking, and pragmatic.
