Job Description

WorkSafe NZ provides health and safety advice and guidance to workplaces to help them understand what is expected and their legal responsibilities. We investigate fatalities and serious accidents and enforce legislation when need be. In addition, we gather intelligence, report on health and safety statistics, build partner and stakeholder relationships and develop prevention programmes.

The Certifications, Approvals and Registrations (CAR) Team is part of the Operations Support Group and undertakes licensing, registration, approvals and certification activities across a range of areas including; asbestos, adventure activities, amusement devices, occupational diving and hazardous substances.  We are seeking to appoint a person with audit and investigation skills for a six month fixed term period to cover a person taking parental leave. The successful applicant will assist the CAR team implement an assurance programme across these regulatory functions.  Appointment will be at the Senior Advisor level. 

The key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Assisting with the development and delivery of an assurance programme of certifications, approvals and registrations issued by the CAR team. This will include proactive and reactive audits.
  • Undertaking investigations of non-compliances related to an approval issued by the CAR team and investigating complaints of poor performance by approval holders.
  • Developing investigative capability within the team by coaching and mentoring other staff.
  • Maintaining operational procedures governing the investigations and assurance programmes.
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements to current business practices, including those arising from new regulatory functions under the Health and Safety at Work Act.


The Senior Advisor will work closely with subject matter experts in the CAR team, Registrars and others responsible for issuing approvals.  Key internal relationships include our inspectorate, operational intelligence and legal advisors.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A background in regulatory compliance
  • Experience in undertaking investigations where these is non-compliance
  • An ability to analyse information and reach defensible conclusions, especially when dealing with conflicting information
  • Knowledge and practical experience of investigative techniques, including ideally a formal tertiary qualification
  • An ability to coach and mentor others
  • Auditing skills and experience are desirable
  • An awareness of the Health and Safety at Work Act would be advantageous
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to manage priorities, be highly organised and deliver tasks and milestones to time, quality and budget


Whilst the successful applicant will be supported by a range of subject matter experts, they must have a willingness and ability to learn new information, particularly in relation to the regulatory framework that approval holders operate under.
