WorkSafe New Zealand is New Zealand's primary health and safety regulator.  Our mission is to transform the performance of workplace health and safety to reduce the high death, injury and illness rates arising from work.  Critical to the success of our 560 staffed Crown entity, is the ongoing commitment to deliver regulatory effectiveness, enhance harm prevention and provide leadership across the health and safety system.

We are looking for an experienced Chief Legal Advisor to provide leadership and direction to the organisation's Legal function! 

Reporting to the General Manager, Better Regulation and Legal Groups, the Chief Legal Advisor is a senior and key role within WorkSafe, leading an overall team of 16 staff across 2 locations (Auckland and Wellington).  The Chief Legal Advisor is accountable for the provision and quality of all legal services provided for WorkSafe.  These range from general legal advice, to drafting legislative instruments, to litigation services. 

As a senior role, the Chief Legal Advisor will also proactively contribute to direction, capability and overall performance of the wider organisation. This includes providing visible leadership across all of WorkSafe.

The ideal appointee will offer a track record of leading legal teams, as well as good regulatory (and ideally health and safety) knowledge.

The competencies and background sought in this role will include:

  • The ability to manage vision and purpose – able to articulate a desired state for the team and connect them with it.
  • Proven strategic ability in regulatory environments, including a strong background and experience with complex legal matters;
  • Strong people leadership skills and experience in developing and leading high performing teams
  • Political savvy to deal with ambiguity and make quality decisions within a dynamic setting
  • Organisational agility – a demonstrated ability to operate within a complex environment, and achieve outcomes using formal and informal channels.
