About your team / Ko te tīma
The Technical Advisory team is responsible for providing specialist advice to workers, PCBUs, and WorkSafe kaimahi. The wider Technical Advisory team specialise in occupational diving, asbestos, hazardous substances, engineering, pipelines, construction, amusement devices and adventure activities. The team you will sit within is responsible for Hazardous Substances and Asbestos.
About the role / Ō te tūranga
The Technical Specialist Asbestos is a key member of the team, bringing deep asbestos expertise and business understanding to support WorkSafe Mahi Haumaru's strategic goal. This role requires a high level of technical competence to provide subject-matter leadership in asbestos, particularly in areas involving licensing, and complex or high-risk industry engagement.
In addition to providing expert advice, this role is responsible for building the capability of WorkSafe kaimahi in asbestos-related matters. You will contribute to ensuring that decisions around asbestos authorisations are robust and effectively mitigate organisational risk, contributing to the overall safety and regulatory integrity of WorkSafe Mahi Haumaru.
What You'll Do/ Ko tōu ake mahi
- This role provides critical support to the Authorisations & Advisory management team in progressing toward WorkSafe Mahi Haumaru's priority plans of permitting and construction.
- It involves supporting, complex compliance monitoring and investigations, and offering expert advice on asbestos licence applications and licensing sanctions and enforcement.
- Contribute to internal policy development and provide input on asbestos regulation issues across the organisation including the inspectorate.
- Additionally you will produce reports and respond to complex external enquiries.
- You will provide business owners and operators with guidance and advice on their regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to training development and delivery, and assist in evaluating and improving service delivery processes.
- Support the Manager Technical Advisory on various projects and ad hoc initiatives, ensuring high-quality, timely, and risk-informed decision-making in asbestos-related matters.
What You'll Bring / Ko ngā pukenga ōu
- Substantial experience and a high level of knowledge of the regulations that apply to work involving asbestos and the licensing regime.
- A sound working knowledge of other relevant Health and Safety regulations and an
in-depth understanding of the sector/s the regulations apply in.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently make sound and pragmatic decisions on compliance with legal requirements, including in complex and/or high-risk cases.
- Expertise in asbestos monitoring, sampling and testing methodologies.
- Excellent relationship building skills
- Excellent written and communication skills
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent industry experience
- The ideal applicant will bring a sound knowledge of management of asbestos in soil.

Salary range / Awhe utu
As part of our remuneration framework the full salary range for the position is from $119,001 to $156,778, and our expected starting base salary for the right person is from $119,001 to $131,593. Note: KiwiSaver/SSRSS employer contribution is additional too/on top of your base salary.
