About your team / Ko te tīma  

You'll join our High Hazards Unit within Operations, working alongside experienced inspectors and technical specialists who are passionate about improving safety in extractives industries.  

About the role / Ō te tūranga  

As a Specialist Health & Safety Inspector – Extractives, you'll focus on mining, tunnelling, quarrying and other high-risk extractive operations. You'll assess safety systems, investigate incidents, and take enforcement action where needed. You'll also influence industry leaders, contribute to standards and guidance, and help shape safer practices across Aotearoa.   

This role supports Aotearoa, so you can expect to travel nationally as part of your mahi.  

What You'll Do/ Ko tōu ake mahi  

  • Inspect and assess mining, tunnelling and quarry operations  
  • Audit safety management systems and statutory submissions  
  • Investigate incidents and recommend improvements  
  • Take enforcement action and prepare for prosecutions  
  • Respond to serious harm notifications and emergencies  
  • Engage with industry to promote best practice  
  • Contribute technical expertise to guidance and standards  

What You'll Bring / Ko ngā pukenga ōu  

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety in mining/quarrying  
  • Experience in operations, geotechnical engineering or regulation  
  • Ability to interpret legislation and apply compliance approaches  
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills  
  • Recognised qualifications in auditing, risk assessment and investigation  
  • Relevant tertiary qualification desirable e.g. mining/civil/electrical/mechanical/geotechnical engineering    
  • Site Senior Executive, A- Grade Quarry Manager, First-class Mine Manager or Tunnel Manager certificate of competence desirable.  
  • Must hold or gain a practising certificate/warrant

Salary range / Awhe utu  

As part of our remuneration framework the full salary range for the position is from $136,748 to $180,441, and our expected starting base salary for the right person is from $136,748 to $151,312.  Note: KiwiSaver/SSRSS employer contribution is additional to/on top of your base salary.
