Tongariro Prison Offender Employment (OE) is looking for a second Painting Instructor to join one of our busiest industries. We are looking for a talented “people person” who can cope with change, is adaptable to dynamic work environments, has high moral standards and believes in the power of communication to make positive changes in a wide range of people's lives.

Our current Instructor Painting has established a well-respected programme which enjoys a reputation for producing quality workers. Those prisoners who choose to pursue a career in painting and decorating post-release have had great success in securing employment.

We need a second instructor to help expand the programme. If you believe you have the skills, experience and unique qualities required to work in a prison environment and add to this successful programme we would like to hear from you.

OE's purpose is to provide the men in our care with quality trade training and to assist them to continue to develop a depth of skill and experience to gain employment post release. At Tongariro Prison you will be instrumental in providing prisoners with both an employment pathway in the painting industry and assisting them to develop the work habits, experience and skills sought after by industry employers. 

The role will require you to train new workers and supervise asset maintenance work parties. Training, theory and practical's, are completed in the workshop while the valuable, work habits, skills development and experience are gained through asset maintenance, as well as other departmental and community projects.

Instructors are expected to hold or, with the appropriate experience, be willing to gain unit standard 4098 in adult education.

He kōrero mōu | About you 

As an Instructor your role is multi-layered, you will have custodial responsibilities, industry-based responsibilities and training responsibilities.

We are looking for an instructor who shows a passion for their trade everyday and for passing on their skills and knowledge in a way that inspires the men in our care to confidently pursue a satisfying career in the painting industry.  Therefore we are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

• Qualifications or proven experience in commercial painting.
• Experience as an adult educator or hold an assessor's qualification (4098) is an advantage.
• Proactive, energetic team leader/player who inspires others to perform at their best
• Can remain positive and resilient in a constantly changing environment
• Fully vaccinated and boosted
• Full pre-employment medical, physical and drug tests will be completed on the successful candidate. A full NZ Driver Licence and First Aid Certificate (before job commencement) is required.

You will be required to work 40 hours per week Monday-Friday.

A comprehensive introduction into Corrections and extensive initial training is provided for the successful applicant. This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position (COVID allowing). As a Department we are looking for the following attributes:

• Understanding of why, and ability to, practically apply tikanga and te reo Māori within your daily work environment.
• Ability to create a training workspace which is engaging and inclusive for all.
• Calm, mature and level-headed approach to problem-solving, communicating, and defusing conflict situations.

Utu ā-tau | Salary

The starting salary for this role is $60,194 - 68,310. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
