Mō te tūnga | About the role

Ara Poutama Aotearoa is a core part of New Zealand's Justice Sector and manages custodial and community-based sentences imposed by the Courts. Our vision is to improve public safety and reduce re-offending through strong leadership, capable staff, a safe working environment and effective partnerships. This role is challenging and diverse and requires the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups. The Manager Industries will manage each industry specific environment, including health and safety, risk/issue management and be responsible for budget management.

The role is diverse and key is the responsibility for managing offender employment activities on site and supporting the Assistant Prison Director to deliver quality outcomes across the various work areas. The Manager Industries will be managing instructors and principal instructors, including the coordination of training and development, delegation of duties and performance management.

With a range of work programmes at Waikeria Prison this is an opportunity to lead the team providing valued training, education, and industry relevant skills to people whom we manage. Areas you may be expected to oversee could include catering, kitchen, laundry, dairy farming, horticulture, grounds maintenance and painting.

We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate, experience in supporting business planning and strategic management, staff management and development, consultation, communication, and relationship management skills.  You will need to demonstrate a positive can do attitude and be willing and able to work as part of a team.

  • Strong people management skills that engage others in the vision essential
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate an effective team to share a common vision, purpose and to achieve strategic and operational goals. 
  • Highly motivated to enable skill enhancement and qualification attainment for prisoners to obtain employment post release.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict in a professional manner.
  • Courage and determination to succeed in a challenging and complex environment
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, including a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders (both internal and external)
  • Develop and drive strategic plans to deliver good business results
