Reporting to the Clinical Manager Mental Health based within the region at Waikeria Prison, we are looking for an extraordinary senior nurse to join our Intervention and Support Practice Team. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health, you'll have a remarkable opportunity to deliver specialised mental health nursing services that can genuinely enhance the well-being of those under our care. Your responsibilities, ranging from triage and assessment to evidence-based treatments, will be crucial in integrating primary health and tertiary mental health services. Beyond that, as a member of our mental health whanau, you'll be part of a vibrant and supportive culture. You'll have access to professional development, clinical supervision, and a holistic approach to recovery-oriented healthcare in the prison environment.
In your role as a CNS, you'll have a role in supporting the professional growth of fellow health professionals at Tongariro. He kōrero mōu | About you
We're seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates who resonate strongly with our kaupapa and can effectively showcase their alignment through a written application, demonstrating how they meet our essential requirements.
As the successful candidate, you will be a Registered Nurse with a current Nursing Council of NZ Annual Practising Certificate. Your role requires a foundation in strong cultural competence, encompassing an understanding of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application, along with cultural knowledge and experience in working with and for Māori, whānau, and iwi.
Your professional background should include specialist Mental Health nursing experience in primary/community, secondary, or tertiary settings. It is imperative that you can demonstrate relevant experience, especially in dealing with individuals facing acute and complex mental health and/or addiction issues.
You will need to exhibit a proven understanding of the professional, ethical, and legislative requirements associated with providing mental health service care and treatment within a prison context. While possessing a master's qualification relevant to Mental Health is desirable, we also encourage applications from those in the process of obtaining this qualification.
Utu ā-tau | Salary
The full salary range is $114,025 - $124,444 from. Appointment and remuneration will reflect clinical competency, skills, and experience relevant to the role.

Hikitia is a dedicated mental health and addiction service formed as part of the redevelopment of Waikeria Prison. Gifted the name Hikitia by mana whenua, the service will deliver culturally and clinically effective mental health and addiction care services to prisoners in our Waikato region.
Hikitia - meaning to lift up, carry in one's arms and take away the troubles that overwhelm a person - has been designed to strengthen our mental health and addictions treatment. The first of its kind in Aotearoa, Hikitia offers a new way of addressing prisoner mental health and addictions issues, with a focus on healing and wrap-around support.
