Hikitia (Mental Health & Addictions Service) Kai and Kōrero at Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections), Waikato

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

“Kotahi ano te kaupapa, ko te oranga o te Iwi”

There is only one purpose to our work: The wellness and wellbeing of our people.

Are you a Mental health professional? Are you interested in being a part of a first of its kind opportunity in Aotearoa?

Please join us for our Kai and Kōrero evening and discover more about opportunities to work inside one of the biggest, most technologically advanced prisons in the Southern Hemisphere.

What is Hikitia Mental Health and Addiction Services?

Hikitia is a collection of mental health and addictions services in the Waikato region across our three prisons: Waikeria, Tongariro and Springhill Corrections Facility, inclusive of a purpose-built unit to provide mental health and addictions support at Waikeria called Te Wai o Pure.

Hikitia is a holistic regional service that has been designed to help address the over-representation of prisoners with mental health and addictions issues and is the first of its kind in New Zealand. It will provide a holistic multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of mental health and addictions, within the prison environment.

Where are the names from?

Hikitia - means to ‘lift up', carry in one's arms and take away the troubles that overwhelm a person.

Te Wai o Pure - means ‘cleansing waters' that restore balance. We acknowledge Ngāti Maniapoto Rangatira, Shane Te Ruki for gifting these names to Ara Poutama Aotearoa.

Te Wai o Pure provides purpose-built mental health and addictions accommodation within the High Security Facility.

We have a variety of roles incorporated into the Hikitia service. Registered mental health professionals work alongside and are an integral part of the MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) This includes roles such as Clinical Nurse Specialists, Mental Health Nurses, Clinical Psychologists, Allied Health Professionals, Kairuruku Hinengaro, Hikitia Support Broker Māori, Kaiako and more.

Our specialised staff will be available during the evenings event to answer any of your questions.
