Pacific Navigator - Te Manawa Taki - Pacific Health at Te Whatu Ora, Waikato

About the Role

The primary purpose of the Pacific Navigator is to:

  • Provide navigation support to Pacific fanau and patients accessing hospital and specialist services
  • Support hospital and specialist care services to be clinically and culturally safe
  • Provide early intervention and facilitate engagement with hospital teams
  • Support individuals, their fanau and community in understanding their health and accessing first specialist assessments, elective treatments and other specialist services including cancer services
  • Collate and report findings as needed to relevant hospital groups including consumer council/committees to ensure Pacific perspectives are part of discussions, planning and implementation of projects as requested
  • Ensure and prioritise a focus on patient safety and quality relating to care and processes within hospital and specialist services
  • Delivery of organisational and service KPI's and contributing to Health targets, clinical service plans.

This role is located in the Te Manawa Taki Region and requires the successful candidate to be living in that region to support the requirements of the role. 

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Pacific Navigator role is part of a dynamic and culturally grounded team within the Pacific Operations and H&SS Improvement department. Based in the Te Manawa Taki region and reporting directly to the Clinical Service Manager, this role sits at the heart of collaborative, whānau-centred care. The team is dedicated to improving health outcomes for Pacific peoples through meaningful engagement, culturally responsive service delivery, and strong partnerships with the community and community providers. Our location allows for deep connections with diverse Pacific communities across urban and rural environments, supporting our mission to build equitable, accessible, and high-quality health services. About you

We are seeking a candidate who demonstrates a high level of maturity, stability, and self-confidence, and who excels in communication—both in individual and group settings. The ideal person will possess strong knowledge of at least one Pacific culture and its traditions and will have a genuine commitment to forming meaningful relationships with Pacific groups. A current driver's license is essential, along with experience engaging with fanau and a deep understanding of the interconnections between people, their communities, and environments. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as strengths in building trusting relationships and data reporting. Key to supporting the success of this role.

  • Tertiary qualification in a health-related field
  • Registered or working toward registration with a professional body
  • The ability to engage effectively with Pacific and Māori consumers (patients/families/whanau)
  • Experience working in health services and with Pacific families
  • Proficient oral and written skills in at least one Pacific language
  • Understands and holds experience related to the implementation of Pacific models of practice
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the Te Manawa Taki Pacific community
