Mō te tūnga | About the role

We have a unique leadership opportunity for a Manager to join our Legal Services Group and lead our Prosecution Support Team.  This team of dedicated advisers and senior adviser are responsible for providing independent case management for people in our care when an individual is charged with a breach of probation conditions and pleads not guilty.

The Manager plays a pivotal role in leading, coaching and training the team in the preparation and presentation of prosecution files and advice, ensuring the preliminary preparation work is professional, timely and meets all evidential and statutory requirements.  The role requires a proactive and independent leader who will take ownership of the teams' programme of work and who is committed to providing engaging and supportive management to a largely remote-based team of professionals.

We are eager to hear from experienced and passionate people leaders with a strong working knowledge of prosecutions and practical experience in preparing for litigation.  Specifically, we will be assessing your application for evidence of the following skills, knowledge and experience required for this role:

  • Proven leadership experience in effectively managing, coaching and mentoring a team;
  • Strong knowledge and background in prosecution, including a sound understanding of criminal procedure and relevant law, particularly issues of sufficiency and adequacy of evidence;
  • Knowledgeable about the process for conducting investigations;
  • Practical experience in preparing for litigation (some experience in conducting litigation could be useful but is not a requirement in this position);
  • Demonstrated capability for problem solving, decision making, exercising judgement, and promoting the “right way to do things”;
  • Strong relationship management skills – able to build and maintain positive working relationships with team members, colleagues and stakeholders at all levels;
  • Strong organisation skills - able to maintain focus on the bigger picture whilst prioritising work activities of team members to achieve the greatest impact;
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and resilient to reflect diverse situations and people; and
  • Familiarity with the Treaty of Waitangi and its application to the work of government agencies.
