The Market Regulation Branch of the Commerce Commission is responsible for regulating the telecommunications, fuel, dairy and retail payment systems. It will also soon be the home of our grocery regulatory responsibilities. It is a fantastic time to join Te Komihana Tauhokohoko.
Ko mātou tēnei | Who we are
Te Komihana Tauhokohoko | The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency. We are establishing a new function to support the work of the Grocery Commissioner. The grocery sector is a $22 billion a year industry - we are conscious of the significance of this work and the importance of supermarkets in the lives of all New Zealanders.
We are keen to find the right mix of people with the capability and passion for this mahi so we can continue to make a positive impact on competition in the sector.
Mō te Teranga | About the role
You will manage a team in the Market Regulation Branch to ensure delivery of the Commission's strategic goals and objectives. In this role you will contribute to the implementation and initial delivery of the grocery regulatory function and play a key role in ensuring the Commission is well prepared for the start of its regulatory responsibilities. Once the Grocery Industry Competition Bill is enacted, you will be responsible for delivering against the Commission's powers, functions and duties (for example – monitoring, wholesale access, or compliance and enforcement).

You thrive on building trusted relationships and enjoy influencing at a senior level. You're an experienced leader and you understand what it takes to deliver. You work collaboratively, genuinely value diversity of thought, and enjoy problem solving in complex and ambiguous environments. Ideally you will have management experience, and a strong understanding of business management and strategy.
We are also looking for the following:
- a leader with emotional intelligence who can work with others and provide clear direction to the team
- Experience developing and implementing regulatory strategies
- Sound understanding of regulatory economics, competition and/or consumer law
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated research and analytical ability
- an in-built drive to get things done to enable statutory deadlines to be met
- Sound understanding of the grocery industry (this is not essential, however would be valuable
