Senior Investigator, Market Regulation at NZ Commerce Commission, Wellington or Auckland
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
We are looking for experienced and motivated Senior Investigators to join a newly established Regulatory Investigations team, a dedicated centre of expertise bringing together our investigative capability from across our Market and Infrastructure Regulation branches.
You'll play a key role in delivering high-quality investigations aligned to the Commission's enforcement priorities, while also helping to build and grow our collective investigative craft through more varied, complex and impactful work.
We are offering one permanent and one secondment/fixed term opportunity for a talented Senior Investigator to join our Regulatory Investigations team. The fixed term/secondment role is available until the 13 November 2026. Either role can be based in our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) offices.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
As a Senior Investigator, you will lead and deliver complex regulatory investigations and compliance-related work across a range of markets and legislative frameworks, including grocery, telecommunications, fuel, payments, electricity and gas.
Working as part of a centralised Investigations team, you will contribute to a coordinated, branch-wide approach to investigations, supporting delivery of priorities set by the Enforcement Committee.
You will:
- Plan, lead and manage investigations, including assessing potential breaches and why they occurred
- Gather, analyse and synthesise complex information to form clear, evidence-based findings
- Apply legal and economic frameworks to assess compliance and recommend appropriate regulatory responses
- Prepare high-quality reports and briefings, and present to senior decision-makers, including Commissioners
- Engage effectively with stakeholders, including regulated parties, industry participants and expert advisors
- Commission and work with external experts where required
- Contribute to consistent investigative practices, tools and methodologies across the branch
- Support and mentor other investigators, helping build capability and strong investigative practice
You will work across different regulatory systems rather than a single sector, offering variety and the opportunity to build broad expertise while contributing to priority investigations across Market and Infrastructure Regulation.
The indicative salary range for this role is $114,327 to $134,502 plus 3.5% KiwiSaver employer contribution. The successful candidate will be appointed at a starting salary which reflects their individual skills, experience, and internal relativities across the organisation.
