About the Role
As a Public Health Nurse, you'll play a key role in supporting the health of the greater Wellington community. The role involves assessing population health needs, understanding the many factors that influence wellbeing, focusing on primary prevention, and applying strong evidence‑based practice. This full-time fixed-term position based in Porirua will see you working directly with whānau and community groups—building relationships, promoting healthy living, and helping to safeguard the wellbeing of the wider population. It's meaningful, varied work that keeps you closely connected to the people you support.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The public health nursing team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora and works towards Pae Ora (healthy futures for all) by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you
As a successful candidate, you will show and understand the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and be skilled in applying its principles effectively in your role. You build and maintain positive relationships at all levels and model an agile approach, try new approaches, learn quickly, and adapt fast. You can utilise advanced nursing knowledge and skills through reflective practice, critical thinking and professional judgement to provide competent care and advice while working to top of scope.
- Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Nurse
- A current Annual Practising Certificate
- An ongoing commitment to professional development
- A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for underserved whānau and communities
- Demonstrated competence in the application of Māori health models to Nursing practice
- Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment
- Demonstrated time management skills
- Proven experience using Patient Management Systems
- An eye for detail and commitment to continuous quality improvement
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Full Driver's Licence
