Job Description

  • A unique team that guides MfE as a Treaty Partner
  • Respected for our strategic view and fresh thinking

The Ministry for the Environment's purpose is to make Aotearoa New Zealand the most liveable place in the world for our children, their children and their mokopuna.

We are the government's primary advisor on the environment and its relationship to New Zealand's economy. We make sure our environment supports New Zealand's prosperity – economic, social and cultural – without compromising it for future generations.   Our environmental stewardship makes a real difference for New Zealanders.

The Government has signalled a reset of relations between iwi/ Māori and the Crown and the need for the Crown to extend partnerships beyond the negotiation table.   For MfE, this means we need to change that way we manage our existing and future partnerships with iwi/ Māori.

We have full-time permanent opportunities for innovative, positive and relationship focused Analysts/ Senior Policy Analysts to join Mana Taiao in our Wellington office.

Mana Taiao is an energetic and highly motivated team that works at the forefront of MfE's ambition to improve Crown-Māori relationships.  Our work is centred on:

  • developing strong partnerships and fostering relationships and opportunities through collaboration with iwi/Māori;
  • negotiating the environment components of Treaty of Waitangi settlements and implementing settlement commitments;
  • supporting policy development across the Natural Resources sector from a Māori perspective;
  • enhancing iwi/Māori capability and capacity to participate in environmental decision-making;

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • Knowledge and proven experience in establishing and maintaining genuine partnerships  with iwi/Māori;
  • An understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi;
  • An understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Aō Māori;
  • The ability to plan and resolve situations in an environment of change.

To be successful in the role of Analyst/ Senior Policy Analyst you will have significant experience in a partnership role, within central government, local government or the private sector.

You will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and track record of initiating, building and growing relationships with iwi/Māori and leadership experience including the ability to inspire, influence and build the capability of others.
