Job Description

Ministry for the Environment

Here at the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) we love innovation, and we love to do things differently.  We value our people and have created an agile work environment to help us mobilise our workforce to address the critical issues that need resolving.  Our people are from diverse backgrounds and work in flexible ways, but are all committed to our responsibility as primary advisors to the Government on the environment.

We tackle the hottest issues that impact on the environment, supporting New Zealand's prosperity – economic, social and cultural, without compromising our environment for future generations.

The Ministry's goal to make Aotearoa New Zealand the most liveable place in the world is a considerable responsibility and one we take seriously.

The role (Wellington location)

With the resignation of the current CFO, the MfE is looking for someone to act in the CFO role while a long term solution is determined.

Over the next six months the successful person will have two key priorities:

  • Deliver the work programme for the second half of Financial Year 18/19 and set the finance team and organisation up for 19/20. This includes standard activity like year-end, annual audit and Ministerial office briefings, along with supporting the organisation to work in a new way.  There is a key focus on supporting the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Directors group around implementing a newly developed business plan. The Emissions Trading Scheme is a key priority and responsibility for the CFO.
  • Bring fresh eyes into the business and provide the COO with the insights and advice they need to build a fit for purpose finance/organisational performance function for MfE. This should enable an efficient, sustainable organisation with a business partnering approach that supports managers and directors to effectively manage our organisation (particularly their budgets).

We are looking for a rising star who is either looking for experience in a CFO role as a stepping stone to a permanent tier three CFO or someone already operating at tier three level (but not currently in the CFO role).  Either way this person will be a high performer who can hit the ground running and quickly gain the confidence of the business, especially the Executive Leadership Team.

The salary band for the role is between $118,656 and $181,940.  The Ministry supports balancing personal and family commitments and is flexible with work arrangements.

For more information about the role please contact Claire Richardson - Chief Operating Officer, or Sam Dawson -  for more information about the recruitment process.

To apply please complete the online questionnaire, complete with your cover letter and CV.  Fixed term and secondment options are welcome.
