Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

This role is permanent, based in Wellington, but with some potential flexibility for the right person. Your focus is to support the small Rangahau Māori team with building and maintaining partnerships, data collection, analysis and reporting in Kaupapa Māori and Māori-medium education settings (early learning and schooling), and to support the broader Te Ihuwaka team in its work as it relates to Māori learners and whānau.

Mōhou ake | About you

We want to hear about any of the following in your cover letter and CV:

  • Your knowledge and experience of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo me ngā tikanga Māori, and te ao Māori.
  • Experience in educational, or broader social sector, research and evaluation, particularly if you have a background employing kaupapa Māori or culturally appropriate practices in a Government research or evaluation context.
  • Experience and skill in writing persuasively for a range of audiences.
  • A pragmatic, can-do approach to your mahi and experience in balancing multiple priorities and perspectives.
  • Where you have empowered and supported others to enhance the capabilities required in their current roles and to effectively deliver on their work priorities.
  • Any relationships with Māori or examples of positive relationships working with Māori.

The ability to communicate effectively in te reo, both conversationally and in writing, is preferred, but not required. Ongoing learning in this area will be supported.

Ko mātou | About Te Ihuwaka

The position is located in the Rangahau Māori team within Te Ihuwaka – ERO's Education Evaluation Centre. The Centre has a mission to provide evaluation insights that are a catalyst for change so that every child achieves success as a lifelong learner. It achieves this through:

  • being an authoritative voice on the performance and quality of education in New Zealand .
  • developing the evidence base about what works to improve learning outcomes
  • supporting education system reform, evidence informed decision making and improvement in

It has a wide and varied work programme including:

  • monitoring the overall performance of the education system
  • thematic reviews of aspects of the system (e.g. teaching practice)
  • deep dives into provision for key groups of learners (e.g. vulnerable children)
  • showcasing innovations and good practice

Across the whole of our work programme, we have a strong focus on the principles of Te Tiriti and the outcomes for Māori learners. As a government agency we work very closely with Ministers.

Te Ihuwaka draws on the wider expertise across ERO, in particular in our expert evaluators and reviewers who work in schools/kura and early childhood education services every day. We also work closely in partnership with other education agencies to achieve change.
