Senior Advisor Operational Policy and Guidance at Education Review Office, Wellington

At the Education Review Office (ERO), we are committed to improving outcomes for all learners in Aotearoa New Zealand. We are looking for a Senior Advisor Operational Policy and Guidance Advisor who can translate policy into practical, effective guidance that supports consistent, high-quality regulatory decision-making. 

This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of policy and operations—shaping how strategy is delivered in practice across licensing, complaints, certification and enforcement activity.

We are the Education Review Office | Te Tari Arotake Mātauranga (ERO), the New Zealand government's external evaluation agency that informs and facilitates improvement in schools/kura and early learning services.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About the role 

In this role, you will support the design and delivery of operational policy and guidance that enables consistent, evidence-based decision-making across regulatory functions. 
You will work closely with teams across the organisation to ensure policy intent is translated into practical tools, processes and advice. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Translating policy and legislation into clear, actionable guidance for operational teams 
  • Designing and improving systems, tools and methodologies that support consistent regulatory practice 
  • Providing high-quality advice, briefings and reports 
  • Supporting or contributing to investigations of non-compliance, including analysing evidence and contributing to regulatory responses 
  • Monitoring the impact of policy changes and identifying and mitigating risks 
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to support consultation and implementation 
  • Developing and maintaining guidance, tools and processes to drive continuous improvement 

Mōhou ake | About you 

We are looking for someone who combines strong policy capability with a practical, delivery-focused mindset. 

You will bring: 

  • Experience in policy, operational policy, regulation or advisory roles 
  • The ability to translate complex policy or legislation into clear, practical guidance 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on evidence-based decision-making 
  • Experience supporting or contributing to investigations or regulatory work (desirable) 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams
