MCO is at the coal face of the tertiary education sector and lead the TEC's financial monitoring of funded entities. We engage directly with Tertiary Education Institutions and undertake financial monitoring analysis to build a clear picture on sector risk and ensure public confidence. We also review sector trends, share insights, and help drive improved performance and compliance across the sector.
About the role - Kōrero mō te tūranga
We're looking for a Senior Analyst to join our high-performing team, reporting to the Team Manager, Risk & Crown Ownership. In this newly created role, you'll help support a large programme of work in monitoring the financial sustainability of Tertiary Education Institutions. You will be responsible for reviewing and analysing financial and non-financial information, undertaking engagement with key stakeholders, and preparing advice for the TEC Board and relevant Ministers.
- Undertake financial monitoring using established processes and tools, identify and mitigate risks for long-term sustainability.
- Review and summarise non-financial reporting such as council sub-committee papers.
- Monitor progress against financial improvement initiatives and investment initiatives.
- Proactively engage with Tertiary Education Institutions on their performance and the outcomes of the financial viability assessment.
- Prepare internal and external briefings on the financial performance of relevant institutions, the sector and where necessary OIAs and parliamentary questions.
- Provide critical thinking around key risks and emerging issues (both at an institutional and sector level).
- Support the TECs continuous improvement of our monitoring activities.
What we are looking for /He kōrero mōu
The preferred candidate will be someone who has a strong business acumen and is comfortable working with financial statements and management accounts. This includes being able to understand key drivers of financial performance and then articulating this concisely to key stakeholders.
We're keen to hear from candidates who bring:
- Hands on experience working with financial information (structured and unstructured) to undertaking financial analysis and make informed decisions.
- An understanding of financial monitoring frameworks.
- Ability to analyse complex problems and integrate information with an inquisitive mindset.
- Ability to work collaboratively both across the MCO group and the wider organisation and system as we monitor complex entities.
- CA or CPA membership (preferred)
- Knowledge of the tertiary education sector (preferred).
- Experience working in Crown monitoring (preferred).
The TEC is a ‘user' of financial information and in this role, you will not be required to prepare financial statements or utilise a day-to-day financial management system.
