Based at Auckland International Airport, our Assistant Customs Officers play a vital role in welcoming and farewelling all international passengers. About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
As an entry level role, we will provide full training which includes both on-the-job and classroom training as well as Officer Safety Tactics (self-defence) training. The start date for this training intake is 21st July 2025.
In this role you'll be:
- Providing excellent customer service by promptly responding to inquiries and providing necessary Customs information to passengers.
- Assisting with processing of NZ Traveler Declaration, collection of revenue of excisable items such as cigarettes.
- Working closely with Customs Officers and other airport staff.
- Maintaining accurate records and updating relevant systems and databases.
- Ensuring passengers meet immigration requirements and escalating situations when required.
- Working on a full-time roster - 8 hours per day - (on a 6 days on, 3 days off) shift rotation.
As an Assistant Customs Officer your base salary will be $53,842 per annum. An additional allowance for working across a range of shifts including weekends, nights and public holidays (on a 6 on and 3 days off roster) is paid per annum of $13,093. We'll also provide you with a full uniform including work boots and free onsite parking.
You will know your shift pattern in advance, so you can plan your life around work, not work around your life.

We're looking for people who have had some experience in customer service, have great organisational skills and attention to detail to process (at times) high volumes of passengers accurately.
You'll be a great addition to our team if you can also demonstrate:
- High levels of integrity, honesty and discretion.
- Great communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people.
- Proficiency in using computer systems, common software applications, and the ability to learn Customs-related software.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.
- Motivation and reliability and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- A good level of physical fitness.

To work for the New Zealand Customs Service, you must be able to meet the following requirements:
- Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident.
- Residing in New Zealand at the time of application.
- Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years*.
- Hold a full NZ Driver's licence at the time of application.
- Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment, drug test and have a clear Police record.
*If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA then you will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
