General Surgeon - Sabbatical Cover at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke's Bay, Hawkes Bay

About the Role
We are seeking a General Surgeon to join our Surgical team on a fixed-term basis to cover a period of sabbatical leave of three-months from mid-June 2026 through to mid-September 2026.
 
We are looking for a surgeon who demonstrates a commitment to high quality care, collegiality, teamwork, teaching and leadership in the field. The successful candidate will manage a wide range of General Surgical conditions and be expected to fully participate in the General Surgical on call roster (1:10) and manage acute patients. 
 
An experienced endoscopist for both upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures would be an advantage. Interest or post-fellowship training in Breast or colorectal would be an advantage.
 
About the Team/Service/ Location
The General Surgical and Vascular team is part of a close knit and supportive medical community within the Hawkes Bay district. Our team is committed to providing a high quality of care to the Hawkes Bay population. There is a strong collegial attitude, supportive teamwork and active commitments to ongoing education and service improvements.
 
We are a department of ten General Surgeons plus a Vascular Surgeon, working alongside our junior medical staff and clinical nurse specialists. We have four accredited General Surgery SET trainees and eight unaccredited General Surgical registrars along with an acute SHO and team House Surgeons. There are clinical nurse specialists for all the major subspecialties. Our support team includes our departmental secretary and enthusiastic nurses on the wards, clinics and theatre.

About you
Applicants should be registered, or eligible for registration, with the New Zealand Medical Council as a Specialist General Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, or equivalent. You should also hold an approved higher qualification in Surgery, enabling Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
