About the Role

Applications are invited for a 2 year fellowship in structural heart disease intervention commencing 1 July 2026 at Waikato Hospital, New Zealand. This post offers a unique opportunity for training in all aspects of structural heart disease, including interventional echocardiography, structural heart disease CT, intervention, exposure to high-risk cardiac surgery and participate in hybrid procedures. The successful candidate will work with highly experienced heart team in one of the leading centres in NZ.

About the Team/Service

Waikato hospital performs approximately 250 percutaneous valve interventions per year including many first in man devices. Aortic and mitral valve intervention, ASD / PFO closure, transcatheter ethanol septal ablation, para-valvular leak closure are performed routinely. This is a dedicated cath lab with integrated imaging capability and anaesthetics support resourced one day a week. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research programme in the department.

About you

The post is ideal for a high calibre trainee with experience in interventional cardiology who wishes to develop specific skills in structural heart intervention. The successful candidate will also be expected to take part in outpatient clinics, pre procedure workup, be involved in teaching of junior staff and participate in the after-hours interventional cardiology consultant on call roster.

Candidates will have completed their advanced training in Cardiology (FRACP or equivalent) and further specialist training in coronary intervention. Full competency at interventional cardiology and experience in basic cardiac imaging are pre-requisite. The candidate will require full or temporary registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand for the duration of the fellowship.
