The role | Te tūnga

We’re looking for a skilled Wellington based Senior Systems Engineer to join our Analytics service line within Technology Services.  Reporting to the Manager – Technology Delivery, you'll play a key role in delivering safe, reliable, and scalable technology services

You’ll be part of a collaborative team of around eight engineers and analyst developers, working across a mix of small/medium projects and BAU. Your focus will be designing, developing, and deploying secure, reliable technology capabilities—while safeguarding system and data integrity.

You will:

  • Install, configure, test, maintain, and monitor systems, databases, and infrastructure
  • Balance competing demands—cost, customer experience, downtime, scalability, flexibility, and sustainability
  • Manage change, incidents, service requests, and other work items effectively
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships through clear communication
  • Set best practices for infrastructure and networking
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, platforms, and approaches
  • Continuously develop your own technical knowledge—while helping others grow theirs
  • Mentor systems engineers and act as a role model in the team
  • Provide operational support and contribute to ongoing optimisation, including cost and capacity planning
  • Perform routine audits to identify risks and opportunities
  • Strengthen organisational resilience through strong security, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery practices

If you’re ready to join a team that values expertise, collaboration, and innovation—and you want a role where your technical leadership really makes an impact—we’d love to hear from you.

We understand transferable skills can come from experience gained from outside of work. We encourage you to be you in your application.

  • Complex distributed systems
  • SAFe Agile principles and practices
  • IT operations in Always‑Up, Always‑Available environments
  • Infrastructure as Code for Cloud and On‑Prem deployments
  • Load balancing, networking, routing
  • Patch management (automated and manual), plus broader security practices

You will flourish here if you enjoy working alongside high‑performing peers, tackling complex problems, and adapting quickly. To be successful, you’ll have experience with:

  • Microsoft Windows (multiple versions)
  • Microsoft IIS
  • Microsoft SQL Server (or similar)
  • Microsoft Active Directory & Microsoft Entra
  • Microsoft Azure and Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines
  • Writing and executing SQL scripts
  • Bash, PowerShell, or similar scripting languages

Other skillsets will be considered, where the applicant can clearly articulate an ability for transferring their experience to a Microsoft stack.

Experience with any of the following will give you an edge:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu Linux
  • NGINX
  • Terraform
  • Databricks
  • Containerisation technologies

We are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and lifting our cultural capability. You don't need to be knowledgeable in all these areas already, but you do need to be on board with learning and have a genuine interest and willingness to grow on this journey with us.

Tell us about yourself in your cover letter, what attracted you to this role, and what you would bring to Stats NZ.
