Reporting to the Unit Manager of the Household Financial Statistics team, the Statistical Production Lead plays a pivotal role in supporting and guiding analysts, and fostering collaboration within and outside of the team.  The work includes planning, monitoring and guiding the team’s work across multiple statistical releases as well as development work, continuous maintenance and data quality improvements.  Your expertise will contribute to improving our statistical production processes and ensuring consistency.

The Census Design and Delivery unit sits at the heart of Stats NZ’s modernisation journey, contributing directly to a large programme of change as we transition toward an adminfirst census. As part of this forwardlooking team, you’ll play a key role in shaping how we design, deliver, and communicate census data. This role is integral to leading the production of our 2026 transitional outputs, helping position customers, partners, and stakeholders to understand and engage with the shift toward a modernised census. You’ll be central in taking people on the journey - building capability, trust, and readiness as we evolve how census information is produced and shared.

This Statistical Production Lead role is fixed term until 13 November 2026 and can be based in  Ōtautahi (Christchurch).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and delivery management for the units work initiatives, particularly development work and ensuring best practice standards are upheld.
  • Assessing and improving delivery flow, ensuring that staff/project teams remain focused on high-value outcomes and organisational standards are consistently applied across products and services.
  • Supporting staff/project teams through the necessary steps to meet milestones and deadlines effectively (e.g. cross-branch business processes, data quality assurance, statistical analysis).
  • Standardising statistical methodologies and processes across different releases.
  • Mentoring and coaching staff/teams to foster self-organisation, continuous improvement, and iterative development approaches to work.

These role would suit someone who can bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or a minimum of five years of experience working on and driving statistical releases and/or development projects and initiatives, including demonstrating a deep understanding of how to successfully coordinate and deliver complex work.
  • Project management experience including, an ability to plan, organize and execute tasks, and manage risks effectively, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality, timely project deliverables, showcasing attention to detail and accuracy in work.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and an open-minded and innovative approach to meeting information needs via a range of solutions.
  • Comfort with environments of change and new processes.
  • An ability to solve problems under pressure.
  • Great team-working skills with the ability to build strong relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain complex concepts in plain English.
