About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Registered Nurse (RN) to join us in the Day Surgery Unit in the Perioperative Department at Te Nikau Hospital, Greymouth. In this role, you will provide safe, high-quality, patient - centred care to patients preparing for, or recovering from, surgical procedures. You will work closely with anaesthetists, surgeons, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless perioperative care and excellent patient outcomes.

Key functions of the role include:

• Admission and discharge of patients for day surgery procedures.
• Admission and preparation of patients that will be admitted to the General Ward post-operatively.
• Preparing patient notes and contacting patients to discuss their proposed surgery or procedure.
• Checking pre-surgical investigations for each patient.
• Organising operating lists to take best advantage of the operating time available and the needs of the patients in conjunction with the theatre team.
• Working in collaboration with the anaesthetist regarding changes in medication plan pre- and post-operatively.
• Obtaining nurse led consent for elective endoscopy procedures.
• Liaising with whānau as necessary and passing on information to them and the patient as necessary for their ongoing care.
• Coordination of work and patient flow.
• Providing postoperative education to patients and whānau such as wound care management and medications.
• Ordering of consumables and other equipment.

About the Service

Our Day Surgery Unit provides surgery to patients of all ages across a wide range of specialties including dental, general surgery, gynaecology, orthopaedics, plastics, and urology. DSU nurses care for patients across the full continuum of care, from pre-admission through to discharge. The unit also accommodates patients admitted for a variety of non-theatre procedures.

This is a close-knit unit where nurses work collaboratively, so the ability to work effectively as part of a small, high-performing team is essential.

About You

You will be a Registered Nurse with a passion for perioperative nursing and a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient - centred care. You will bring strong clinical skills, adaptability, and a collaborative approach to your practice.

You will ideally have:

• Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate
• At least 2 years post-registration experience within a hospital setting
• Strong clinical assessment skills, particularly in pre and post - operative care
• Experience in monitoring patients following anaesthesia and supporting their recovery
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills
• A commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-focused care

Previous experience in DOSA, PACU, or perioperative nursing is highly desirable, but full training and support will be provided for the right candidate.
