Mō te tūranga mahi – about the role

Join our Technology and Data team as a Software Engineer, where you will design, build, and seamlessly integrate the applications that power the GCSB and NZSIS.

In this “Mission‑possible” environment, you and your team own the full software lifecycle— from design and rapid prototyping to production deployment and ongoing support—ensuring each system remains reliable, secure, and future‑ready.

As a software subject‑matter expert, you will shape technical standards and best practices across the organisation while delivering high‑quality code that underpins our critical intelligence capabilities.

Ko wai koe – about you

You are a driven software engineer who treats every line of code as a strategic asset and thrives in a fast‑moving, security‑focused environment.

If you have some experience with:

  • Java and/or Javascript/Typescript/ReactJs
  • Containers and Kubernetes fundamentals
  • Database fundamentals in one or more of ElasticSearch, Redis, MariaDB, and Postgres
  • Be comfortable working across the full SDLC and using CI/CD
  • Good understanding of applied DevSecOps

The expected appointing range for this position is:

  • Level 1: $87,048 - $92,851
  • Level 2: $103,009 - $109,876

Before you apply

Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.

You must:

  • Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years

OR

Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years

  • Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
    • Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
