About the Role
We are seeking a Medical Registrar Advanced Trainee in Older Persons Health looking to further your Geriatric Medicine training by joining our Medical Department at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The 2027 training year commences on 1 February, and mid-year starts on 2 August.
We are accredited to deliver both Core A and Core B of the Geriatrics Curriculum, each for a duration of six months. Additionally, we offer provisional approval for a six-month Geriatric Medicine Registrar training position at the Basic Physician Training (BPT) level.
Our department is led by 5 Consultants with diverse subspecialty interests, including Dementia, Orthogeriatrics and Perioperative Medicine, Movement Disorders, Frailty, and Community Geriatrics. The successful applicant will be supported in developing competence in all aspects of the Geriatrics Curriculum with strong opportunities for audit and research interests, as part of a personalised training plan.
Inpatient rehabilitation services are provided through our Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation (AT&R) ward, which provides multidisciplinary care for Stroke, Orthogeriatric, Neurological, and Frailty patients. The ward works closely with Older Persons' Mental Health services and is staffed by 2 consultant led teams managing 30 beds.
You will also have the opportunity to participate in a novel shared decision-making clinic, `CARES, for high-risk patients undergoing elective surgery. We also offer training in rural outpatients and slow-stream rehabilitation at a rural hospital in Central Hawkes Bay.
As a regional hospital, your afterhours work will be in Acute General Medicine, and there are opportunities to extend your training time in Hawkes Bay by rotating through other accredited medical registrar positions, including both advanced and basic training placements.
About the Team/Service/Location
Our Acute Medical Service comprises nine ward-based teams, supported by a team of 28 dual-trained Internal Medicine Physicians, 25 Registrars, 15 House Officers, and support from Trainee Interns. The broader service encompasses a wide range of medical specialties.
We foster a collaborative, supportive and collegial work environment. Our current rotations include Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine (with Neurology and Older Peoples Health), Renal, as well as outpatient-based rotations in Medical Oncology and Haematology.

Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital is the principal acute hospital and specialist service provider, supported by smaller satellite facilities in Central Hawkes Bay, Napier, and Wairoa.

- Youre a Resident Medical Officer (RMO)
- Qualify for RACP Advanced Training. RACP Advanced Trainees in other Australasian medical specialties wishing to gain Older Persons exposure are also welcome, and can accredit runs as part of non-core training. Older Persons rotations are also available for Basic Trainees, please apply to the Medical Registrar advertisement.
