About the Role

As a Laboratory Technician / Trainee - Histology, you will provide technical support within the Histology Laboratory, assisting with the preparation and processing of specimens to support diagnostic services.

Youll carry out laboratory procedures in line with established protocols and quality standards, ensuring accurate and timely results. This includes supporting specimen processing, maintaining laboratory equipment, managing supplies, and ensuring all work meets clinical, safety and organisational requirements.

You will work closely with pathologists, scientists and laboratory staff, contributing to the efficient daytoday operation of the service. The role also involves ongoing learning, participation in training, and commitment to continuous improvement and high professional standards.

About the Team/Service/ Location

You will be part of the Histology Laboratory within the wider Laboratory Services team at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldier Memorial Hospital. The service provides essential diagnostic support to clinicians and plays a key role in patient care pathways across the hospital and wider healthcare system.

About you

You are motivated, detailfocused and interested in science and healthcare. You will have:

  • Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (or ability to obtain)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to follow protocols and procedures accurately
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • A positive, problem solving attitude
  • Interest in laboratory science and continuous learning
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equitable health outcomes

Desired:

  • Previous laboratory or histology experience
  • Computer and data entry skills
  • Understanding of the healthcare environment
