About the Role

We are looking for intern psychologists to join Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) as part of the Psychology Intern Programme in 2027.  This is a fantastic opportunity for those who are entering their final year in a tertiary specialist or clinical programme on the road to become registered psychologists.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work in a variety of clinical settings within MHAIDS which may include inpatient, community, adult, forensic rehabilitation, younger persons (child and family), specialist Māori and Pasifika services.

Interns will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assess and work with people experiencing a range of issues including coexisting mental health and addiction issues. Successful applicants will receive clinical supervision and mentoring whilst they develop skills in assessment, psychological formulations and interventions. 

About the Team/Service/ Location

MHAIDS is the Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service, for CCHV and Wairarapa Districts, at Health New Zealand.  As a large provider of secondary specialist mental health and addiction and intellectual disability services, we are able to provide interns with a range of clinical opportunities throughout the 2027 internship. 

The successful candidates will be part of the MHAIDS whānau and will have access to pastoral and clinical support from a dedicated Psychology Intern Coordinator. Alongside this there will be opportunities for peersupport opportunities with other interns as well as specific professional support from Clinical Psychologists within MHAIDS. 

Interns are placed across a wide range of services within MHAIDS. We aim to ensure interns have a range of child and adult opportunities across the life span to match their qualification requirements.  We have a proven record of supporting Psychology interns into permanent employment at the end of their Intern year.

About you

The ideal candidate(s) will:

  Be enrolled in a NZ psychology board registered tertiary level course (e.g. clinical psychology programme).

  Have a solid understanding of mental health, addictions, physical health and social issues that impact tangata whaiora, their whanau and the community.

  A proven academic and clinical track record as a psychology student (undergraduate and postgraduate) and have a willingness and desire to apply their skills and knowledge in a specialist health setting, under supervision. 

  Have already completed a bachelor's degree in psychology, and are concurrently working on a Masters or PhD/DClin Psy in applied psychology (e.g Clinical or child and family).

  Have completed their research and be ready to commence work in 2027 and have a commitment to stay and work in the Wellington region post qualification and internship. (preferred)
