Traffic Engineer - Auckland Transport Operation Centre at New Zealand Transport Agency, Auckland

Join the Auckland Transport Operation Centre (ATOC) and help deliver safer, more reliable and efficient journeys for people across Auckland.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
As a Traffic Engineer, you'll provide practical, evidence-based engineering solutions that improve traffic flow, network safety and customer journeys.

You'll optimise traffic signals and corridors, support real-time traffic operations and provide technical advice on planned events, unplanned incidents and capital construction projects. You'll also help shape future network strategies by sharing operational insights and recommendations with teams, partners and stakeholders.

This includes:

  • Undertaking traffic signal optimisation and reviewing traffic management and geometric designs
  • Analysing network performance and recommending improvements to safety and traffic flow
  • Configuring, operating and troubleshooting traffic systems, including SCATS and signal controllers
  • Developing mitigation plans for events, incidents and construction activities
  • Producing clear, traceable technical reports
  • Supporting real-time traffic operations and participating in rostered on-call and incident response arrangements
  • Collaborating with Auckland Transport, NZTA, emergency services, consultants, contractors and other partners.


View the position description. Appointment base salary is expected from $92,700 to $99,910 commensurate with skills and experience.

You'll bring:

  • At least two years' experience in traffic or transportation engineering
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to translate complex technical information into practical recommendations
  • Confidence working collaboratively with internal teams, external partners and stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A customer-focused approach and commitment to accurate, high-quality delivery
  • Sound technology skills and confidence using a range of computer applications
  • An interest in continuous improvement, innovation and developing others.


Experience with SCATS or a similar traffic signal control system is highly desirable. Knowledge of the legislative environment for traffic operations, local government processes and Power BI would also be beneficial.

You'll hold an engineering degree in civil engineering, engineering science, software engineering or another relevant discipline. A current New Zealand driver licence is required. Accreditation with Engineering New Zealand and a master's degree in engineering are desirable.

The Optimisation Delivery Team proactively improves Auckland's transport network through signalised corridor optimisation, design advice, operational oversight and mitigation planning for planned and unplanned events.
