A current opportunity exists to join the Standards New Zealand Business Capability team as an Advisor, Policy and Procedures.

The Standards New Zealand (SNZ) team is a newly merged business within MBIE, as a result of the passing of the Standards and Accreditation Act 2015. SNZ is responsible for the development and maintenance of hundreds of standards that benefit New Zealand. It provides standards solutions in diverse subject areas such as building and construction, energy safety, health and disability, environmental management, legal risk, information technology, sport and recreation, and fertility services.

Standards help make life safer and easier. They improve the effectiveness and reliability of many goods and services used every day.

The Advisor Policy and Procedures is a specialist position within the Standards New Zealand team. Standards New Zealand is part of an international coalition of organisations working in collaboration to develop, maintain, and provide access to standards. The prevalent techniques and processes are built from requirements under the Standards and Accreditation Act 2015 (the Act), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Directive.

The Advisor Policy and Procedures is responsible for ensuring quality and consistency of advice and practices in accordance with the Act, ISO/IEC directives, and operating principles.

The Advisor Policy and Procedures will be responsible for developing and implementing the plan to transition the business unit from the current certification AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 Quality management systems – Requirements to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2016, within agreed time frames.


The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Proven expertise and experience in developing and implementing a continuous improvement programme (for example AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008)
  • Expertise and experience in the development of policies and procedures that relate to statutory and/or government processes
  • Knowledge of international best practice in the development and use of standards and standardisation (or the development of similar codified information or instruments)
  • Ability to quickly assimilate new information and areas of work
  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships with managers and staff
  • Good communication skills – able to share knowledge clearly
  • Understanding of MBIE and where Standards New Zealand fits in delivering outcomes for the Ministry will be useful
  • A tertiary qualification in management/commerce or comparable relevant experience in the public sector or other sectors will be useful
  • Experience in using process modelling tools such as BPMN, Help & Manual or others as desired
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand
