Job Description

Analyst/Senior Analyst - Commercial Operations

The Treasury's Commercial Operations Group monitors over $100 billion worth of financial and commercial assets owned by the Crown. Our aim is to help maximise the value of this portfolio through high-quality analysis and advice. Our work is at the crossroads between the commercial world and central government, and we need talented people from all walks of life to support us in this work. Within Commercial Operations, the Strategy and Policy team has a specific portfolio mandate, relating to both the financial assets held by Crown Financial Institutions (CFIs) and the commercial portfolio as a whole.

We're looking for an analyst to help us:

  • monitor and manage the relationships between the Treasury and our Crown Financial Institutions (including the Guardians of NZ Superannuation, ACC Investments and the Government Superannuation Fund)
  • provide advice on opportunities, challenges and risks facing the financial asset and commercial portfolios overall
  • develop and apply tools to improve insights into performance, industry dynamics and key drivers of value and risk, and
  • provide advice on ownership policy and institutional design.

With at least 2-5 years of relevant experience, you may currently be employed as a financial analyst, investment manager, AFA or equivalent in the financial services sector. You could also be working inside a corporate finance or financial services team in an accounting firm, or at a commercial bank, investment bank or private equity firm. Wherever you are, you will be conversant in modern portfolio theory and have the intellectual curiosity required to continually evolve in step with the dynamics of the financial markets and evolution of thinking in finance.

In addition, you will have:

  • strong technical skills in financial and investment modelling and analysis
  • experience and practical knowledge of financial markets and issues relating to funds management
  • proven experience of financial and business research and analysis, dealing in both commercial and strategic issues
  • excellent oral and written communication skills
  • well tested interpersonal and relationship skills
  • ability to work constructively in a team environment, and
  • a relevant tertiary qualification, with a strong preference for candidates who have or are in the process of obtaining a CFA or CAIA designation.

The New Zealand Treasury prides itself on the quality of its staff and understands the importance of fostering a work environment where excellence is recognised and where staff are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential.

To this end, we provide:

  • a lively and supportive team environment with challenging and interesting issues to address, working on projects that will have an impact of the lives of New Zealanders
  • a collaborative work environment where you will interact with a range of people, within the Group, in the wider Treasury and with a large range of external stakeholders, and
  • competitive remuneration
