Are you someone who is passionate about the conservation of New Zealand’s natural flora and fauna, our history and promoting outdoor recreation opportunities?  Are you skilled at prioritising, planning, monitoring and reporting on field activities; and sharing your skills and knowledge with others?

The focus for this exciting, senior ranger position is based around prioritising and planning our work, monitoring outputs and then reporting on the activities in the District - across our biodiversity, recreation and historic functions.  The team in the Mahaanui District deliver a broad range of conservation work from the Rakaia River in the south to the Conway River including Banks Peninsula.  The District has the city of Christchurch as its core, so engaging more families, children and first time visitors in outdoor recreation opportunities is a key focus.  Mahaanui has a large portfolio of iconic, historic assets that have local, national and international significance.

The successful applicant will have:

  • At least a tertiary qualification or equivalent experience and achievements in science or natural heritage management
  • 4-5 years extensive experience in the practical management of biodiversity (including marine and threat management), recreation and historic work programmes
  • great planning and project management skills, a can do attitude and is someone who wants to get things done on the ground
  • superb relationship management and collaboration skills with iwi, public, stakeholders and staff
  • full drivers licence and current First Aid Certificate
  • ability to use IT systems, interpret GIS information, complete reports, and produce maps
