The Urban Performance team 


Well performing cities play a key role in modern economies. There is a significant opportunity to increase the contribution that New Zealand’s urban areas, particularly Auckland, make to New Zealand’s prosperity. MBIE has portfolio responsibility for many aspects central to the performance of our urban systems. Through the establishment of a new Urban Performance team we are looking to better harness that influence towards our objective of growing New Zealand for all.  


This newly-formed team is responsible for working across MBIE, central and local government to:  

  • Understand what drives city performance in New Zealand
  • Provide cross-portfolio, urban-focused policy advice to influence government’s actions on housing, economic development, skills and other areas  
  • Support and shape government-led urban development initiatives


As a part of our team we can offer you the opportunity to:

Key requirements for the role


We need a proven policy manager with an innovative approach to come on board and use their strategic nous and relationship management skills to build the team, prioritise the work programme and work closely across a range of internal and external stakeholders.


To be successful in this role you will need policy acumen, an excellent understanding of the machinery of government, strong relationship management skills, experience (and a high degree of comfort) dealing with ambiguity along with a proven ability to communicate with influence. A demonstrated ability to building a team culture and a flexible approach to your work and willingness to adapt to changing priorities are also required.
