The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) plays a critical role in regulating capital markets and financial services in New Zealand and providing better outcomes for investors, consumers, professionals, businesses, and for the New Zealand economy.
As part of the General Counsel function within FMA, our Enforcement team is responsible for all legal matters pertaining to the enforcement action that the FMA considers in response to misconduct and contraventions of the law and professional standards in financial markets. We now have a rare opportunity available for a Head of Enforcement to lead this team and manage the FMA's litigation and enforcement activities.
Reporting to the General Counsel, this role will see you provide and implement well-reasoned and forward-thinking advice relating to the overall strategic management of the FMA's enforcement activities, while also setting direction and managing and developing our high performing enforcement team. You'll provide well researched, commercial advice and recommendations to assist the Board, Chief Executive, Executive team and other managers to make quality decisions around the strategic and operational management of enforcement activities. You will have responsibility for overseeing the FMA's litigation caseload, providing advice and guidance for the internal team and managing our external advisors. You'll interact frequently with the FMA Board and Senior Executive team.
Key to your success in this role is your senior-level civil litigation experience, preferably gained within a regulatory context (with ideally some experience in criminal litigation). You'll have solid and demonstrable experience leading complex and large scale cases. Some exposure to financial services, while not essential, will certainly stand you in good stead. As an experienced people leader and excellent communicator, you'll be comfortable managing internal and external counsel and/or stakeholders, and you'll be ready and able to draw on your previous experience working at a senior executive and/or Board level.
In return, we'll offer you the chance to join a friendly, approachable team of highly experienced professionals and an organisation with a strong commitment to developing your career, while also maintaining a life/work balance.
