Job Description

CMHN - Youth Forensic Team (YFT)

Registered Nurse - 1.0 FTE

Have you thought about working as a Registered Nurse in a mental health nursing role working with youth in the justice arena that promises opportunities for early intervention and the chance to make a real difference?

The Youth Forensic Team at CDHB is looking to appoint an experienced Community Mental Health Nurse. A motivated and flexible self-starter, you will enjoy meeting the challenges of working both autonomously and as part of a team to develop sound working relationships with our many community partners/agencies whom you will be liaising with. The ability to work in close collaboration with the youth, their family / whanau, other team members as well as partnering organisations is imperative to effectively engage appropriate clinical interventions for this vulnerable client group.

Skills and Experience required:

  • Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and have a current APC with scope for Mental Health Nursing
  • Ability to build, strong effective relationships with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Methodical, organised approach with strong administrative skills and time management skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changeable nature of your work
  • A current full NZ drivers licence.

The CMHN role YFT is to provide psychiatric and AOD consultation, screening and assessment as required for Youth Court, Youth Drug Court and Rangatahi Court within Christchurch, Ashburton, Rangiora, Timaru and cover leave for the West Coast Courts as needed. As part of the YFT you will contribute to the continued development of the provision of forensic care within the CDHB Specialist Mental Health Services.

Drawing on your mental health nursing experience will be fundamental to providing consultation and management advice to the Youth Justice Residential facility for their interactions and care of the challenging young people admitted there. With sound psychiatric assessment skills and a robust knowledge of relevant legislation including Child, Youth and Family Act, MHA, Criminal Justice Act, your ability to accurately identify risk and plan and advise appropriate management strategies will be exceptional.

These are challenging groups to work with - imagine adolescence and mental health combined… but it can be immensely satisfying to see the change and positive future possibilities.

YFT has mentoring and training opportunities for new and existing staff so don’t be scared. Prior experience in a mental health setting is important though.
