Job Description

Technician – Animal Science

Christchurch based

Permanent, Proportional 0.5FTE (18.75 hours per week)

  • Provide a high level of husbandry/health care for all housed animals
  • Organise teaching/animal room consumables and teaching resources
  • Oversee students working in the animal house for workplace training

The Role

As an Animal Science Technician you will be responsible for the day to day and future developments of the animal room. This will include caring for all housed animals, collecting resources and preparing class materials for the veterinary nursing and animal care programmes, maintaining work and teaching areas, updating and maintaining animal use records and inventories and overseeing students in the care, welfare and handling of animals.

Skills/Experience

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant animal science qualification
  • At least 1 year of experience working with small mammals, birds and reptiles
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Current NZ Drivers’ License
  • Genuine passion to work with animals, demonstrating care and compassion
  • Knowledge of disease management/recognition and general health and husbandry care of animals
  • Working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and relevant compliance requirements under the Animal Ethics Committee
  • A strong sense of responsibility and proven organisational skills
