Senior Editor, Te Papa Press

Te Papa Press is the award winning publishing imprint of the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa.

We are seeking a Senior Editor to work with our Publisher, overseeing the entire editorial and production process and delivering high quality books on time and to budget.

To be successful in this exciting and challenging role you will need to be an energetic and experienced professional with:

  • A recognised qualification in publishing and a thorough working knowledge, based on several years' sound experience in a reputable publishing house, of editorial principles and practice


  • Well-established founded project management skills, including competencies in effective time management and budget management and experience in managing the production of multiple individual books simultaneously


  • A very high level of written and verbal communication skills


  • The ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and confidently at all levels – from external contractors to museum colleagues


  • Experience in working with photographers, digital imagers, illustrators, authors and printers (locally and internationally), including experience in management of the design process, and skill in critically analysing type, images and layout.


  • Knowledge of current print production technology and practices, including digital colour management, press passing and pre-press management, and some knowledge of photographic, design and layout software.


  • Understanding of the commercial nature of the book publishing industry


  • A commitment to the principles of biculturalism, a good basic understanding of Maori tikanga, and some familiarity with Maori language at an elementary level


  • Sound teamwork qualities


This is a fixed-term position through to September 2019.  This is a full time role, but we are happy to consider flexible options for the right candidate. It is based at the Museum in Wellington.
