Foreign Policy Officer Opportunities

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Are you someone who:

  • Makes sound, reasoned decisions and is willing to trust their judgment, knowledge and experience to suggest new ways of doing things
  • Has exceptional communication, influencing and interpersonal skills and an inclusive and collaborative approach to relationships and teamwork
  • Is high performing and driven by success and has the ability to pick themselves up after setbacks and learn from the experience
  • Has an interest in New Zealand and our place in the world and a desire to add your own creative and unique contribution

We are looking for a diverse range of people to embark on careers as foreign policy officers.  A foreign policy career in the Ministry will offer you the opportunity to work across a broad range of areas in New Zealand, regionally and internationally.  This includes contributing to policy recommendations, analysing trends in international political, trade and economic developments, participating in inter-governmental discussions, and helping to implement policy. As a foreign policy officer you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge, skill and expertise in a range of different roles in Wellington and offshore at one of our embassies, high commissions, missions or consulates.

A foreign policy career is built on a number of core foundations that we want to see in our applicants.  We look for well-rounded individuals with very good academic records, preferably at post-graduate level.  We look for work or vocational experience that has enabled you to build professional skills, knowledge, and networks.  We look for you to have an understanding of the history and culture of New Zealand and a familiarity with Te Reo and tikanga Māori.  While not essential, a proficiency in languages in addition to English, is advantageous.

Applicants must hold New Zealand citizenship and you must be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate New Zealand Government security clearance.  The ability and willingness to travel is also required for these roles, and there are opportunities to live and work at MFAT's offshore locations.
