Job Description

Communicator - Trainee

New Zealand Police

Annual Salary Range $46,336 - $52,993

  • Rewarding career
  • Be part of an exciting and respected team
  • Fantastic benefits and competitive salary

Police is looking for more great talent to answer calls - people who want to help others by connecting them to the right Police services and providing direct and personal assistance.

Police is increasing its resources, and changing the way it works to provide a better service to those contacting us. As part of this transformation, Police has announced that a new communications and digital centre will open in Paraparaumu. This is an exciting time to join Police in a vital role.

NZ Police's mission is to be the safest country in the world and to have the trust and confidence of all. The way the public communicate and engage with Police is central to achieving this.

The role

This is a customer service role like no other, where your customer focus and communication skills will help make a positive difference to the lives of people around you.

We will train you

Our in depth classroom scenario-based training and our supportive culture, will set you on the path towards a rewarding and successful career within NZ Police. You will receive:

  • 7 weeks initial classroom-based training
  • 2 week coaching (after training)
  • Ongoing mentoring & support.

Who will you be helping?

As a Police communicator you will be the first point of contact for people who need assistance in non-emergency situations, completing reports of historic crime where Police attendance isn't required immediately and providing the public with information or connecting them to the right place.

This is not your average call centre, customer service role. Every call is different, so you need to be able to think on your feet and deal with anything that comes your way. We aim to provide a world class service, where we resolve calls at the first point of contact, so there may even be times you'll need to deal with critical events or emergency situations. Our training will ensure you have the knowledge, skills and support to respond to situations like this.

The must haves:

  • Be a New Zealand Citizen, Australian Citizen or a New Zealand Resident
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills
  • Ability for you and your immediate family to pass security and background checks
  • Reliable transport to get to and from work for a 24/7 roster
  • Typing speed of 40 words per minute (or more) with at least 96% accuracy
  • Clean credit record, or a payment plan in place for a minor default
  • Willingness to undertake a full medical assessment (at your own expense).

We welcome applications from everyone who wants to help people regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture, sexuality, or faith. To better reflect New Zealand's growing diversity we want you to bring your background, culture, and values to the job.
