Job Description

The Ministry for Women, Te Minitatanga mō ngā Wāhine, is improving outcomes for New Zealand women. We are the Government's principal advisor on achieving better results for New Zealand women.

We identify and take action where women and girls remain disadvantaged. We build evidence to influence others, publicising issues, and providing advice and support to national policy and local initiatives that improve lives for women and girls.

About the position

This is an important senior role and requires leadership of our policy work programme as well as overseeing the strategic direction of the organisation as part of the Leadership Team. Your focus will be across the organisation, overseeing current operations and delivery, with a strong emphasis on our future direction and how we influence and collaborate with others to achieve results for New Zealand women.

We are focused on being more diverse in our perspectives and advice, collaborating more effectively with our partners, and improving the visibility of our work.

As one of two policy leaders in our organisation, you will lead our work programme and achieve results for women. The current focus of this role is on our work in the areas of Family Violence, International and Ministerial Servicing.

You will help build our policy function to deliver high quality advice to the Minister and related to our strategic outcomes. You will deliver outcomes through a strong strategic and performance focus, including effective people management and collaborating with stakeholders.

The salary band for this position is $140,000 - $180,000.

What we can offer

We are a small agency and operate a 'one-Ministry' culture where everyone contributes to our work programme. This role is an excellent opportunity to step up to a role with a strategic management focus, working closely with our Chief Executive and Minister's office, as well as on a range of issues that impact New Zealand women.

The Ministry values diversity in our workforce. Diversity to us means seeking as wide a range of views and opinions into our work as possible so we can serve all women and girls in New Zealand. We value work life balance and have a range of flexible work options. We select on capability, not gender and welcome applications from a wide range of candidates who have/demonstrate:

  • A tertiary qualification, preferably to postgraduate level, or suitable senior level experience
  • Experience setting or contributing to organisational strategy and a future focus
  • Experience working with or in the public sector with a proven ability to achieve results in a political environment
  • Experience in developing and managing policy advice, processes, and consultation in central government and delivering policy advice to Ministers and senior officials
  • Proven people management skills and experience of managing a diverse group of policy specialists
  • Strong relationship management, communication and influencing skills
