Job Description

Casual Residential Youth Workers

Location: Te Au rere a te Tonga Youth Justice Residence & Te Whare Awhi Remand Home

Role Type: Casual (7 Day roster including weekends)

We are a Ministry with a commitment to putting children and young people at the heart of everything we do and say.  We put Tamariki first, we believe Aroha is vital, we respect the Mana of people, we are Tika and Pono, we value Whakapapa and we recognised Oranga is a journey.

We are seeking interest from energetic, motivated people with experience in working with young people to join our pool of casual staff.  While qualifications are of benefit, it is not a requirement and being able to demonstrate your transferable skills are just as important.

To be successful in this role you will need to be able to inspire at a grass roots level and have the ability to engage positively with young people.  Ideally you will have experience working with youth, but above all else you'll be motivated to make a difference and be able to think creatively to find solutions.

Casual Residential Workers are called on to cover for permanent staff on an ‘as and when required' basis. The position would ideally suit those that have an interest in social work or youth work and may have partially completed a qualification towards this goal.  While qualifications are of benefit, it is not a requirement and being able to demonstrate your transferable skills are just as important.

You must:

  • Have a full Drivers Licence.
  • Have real-world, real-life experience and a belief that these young people can build a better future for themselves with the right support.
  • Have some inbuilt resilience in dealing with young people who are facing challenging times (and their related behaviour) so a sense of humour helps.
  • Meet the VCA safety checking and Ministry vetting requirements (Police Check etc.)

About the Residences:

Te Au rere a te Tonga Youth Justice Residence in Palmerston North is one of four Youth Justice Residences across New Zealand, which is run by –Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children.   We provide a secure 24 hour a day, 7 day per week environment for up to 30 young men and women aged 14-17 who are sentenced or remanded by the Youth Court. The Residence promotes individual change and growth through specialist education services, clinical services, individual and group programmes, and physical activities.

Alongside this, we run Te Whare Awhi Remand Home which is an exciting new initiative in Palmerston North.  The home is a 24 hour a day, 7 day per week environment for up to 5 young men aged 14-17 who are remanded by the Youth Court.    The home promotes a strong family environment with focus on activities and programmes which create positive behaviour be it through sports, education or general community based activities.  Our focus is on motivating kids to behave instead of consequence them for not.

Both the Residence and the Remand Home operate seven days a week, the position covers shift work (including night shift), 6.15am to 2.30 pm & 2.15pm to 10.30 pm and 10.15 pm to 6.30 am.  It can involve weekends and public holidays.
