About the role

The Assessor Manager position is a combination of a technical specialist and team leader role that ensures each science proposal received by MBIE receives a fair and independent assessment.

This newly created role will take the lead to recruit and manage MBIE's College of science Assessors and run complex businesses processes for the Endeavour Fund and other science investment processes. The MBIE College of science Assessors is diverse across many areas of science and will involve interactions with New Zealand based and international Assessors.  

The Assessor Manager will require a good understanding of scientific peer review and on an annual basis recruit, train and manage a team of science graduates to provide quality specialist support for the assessment process.


We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experience in a science and/or research position in New Zealand, in particular the ability to read and understand scientific proposals for research.
  • Strategic thinking and provision of robust specialist advice on assessor management to support the branch's business plan objectives.
  • Ability to research a number of scientific sources of information to identify high calibre science assessors.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and gain the respect of technical scientific experts.
  • Excellent skills in process management disciplines and be able to respond to tight deadlines.
  • Experience in team management and supervision of day to day activities.
